11/19 Berks Games Day

Various games of 40K going on
Berks-PA Gaming Club held their 2nd official meeting at the Muhlenberg Recreational Center. We had to squeeze this in on a Friday night due to scheduling conflicts with locating a suitable facility so close to the Holidays.

That did nothing to deter our amazing community that makes up the Berks-PA Gaming Club. Somewhere around 25 players from various ages (my 8 year old son), to our resident "old man" Archer, all participated in a variety of games that shape the interest of our members.

Flames of War battle going on, each player with 600 points
Many games of Warhammer 40,000 were going, which by far is the most represented game in our club, but many others were also being played. Games of Battle Fleet Gothic were happening, as well as a number of us stretching out into Flames of War. After a demo game, those of us starting to build beginners armies got together and played a 3 vs. 3 Flames of War throwdown with 3 allied US forces taking on 2 German players who seem to have conscripted some Canadians. It was very fun and everyone had a good time. There were also club members working on models and holding clinics on painting and modeling.

What we learned from this event is that we may have to move into the next room at the facility, which is much larger, to host all of our members and activities. The turnout was incredible, the club support was fantastic. Several members signed up for Elite membership, we had some Club T-shirts available, and Starvos, our forum master, held some raffles throughout the night, which may be something we do more of next time.
25 players, all local to the Berks Gaming Club. I can only imagine what happens when we continue to network out with our friends at Lancashire Gaming, The Gaming Garage in West Chester, Lehigh, and our friends in Harrisburg at the Adventurer's Guild.

Berks-PA Gaming Club will not be hosting an official gathering in December, but will be supporting our friends in Lancaster at Lancashire Gaming on December 4th. The Adventurer's Guild is hosting a (limited seating-10) Apocalypse Game December 11th.

The next Berks Games Day will be Sunday January 9th, 2011 (After that we will be on Saturdays), from 12:00 noon till 7:00pm. There will also be a large club Apocalypse Game going on with 3 various battles. Please check on the Forum for Details. If you wish to participate in this Warhammer 40K event, that will have an impact on the False Hope Crusade campaign, you may play in the large 'super-heavy' board, the smaller 'infantry' board, or even the space battle with Battle Fleet Gothic.
Paul Bates celebrating his first 40K Victory over a Veteran Player
As President of the Berks-PA Gaming Club, I want to say how proud I am of all of our members, new and veteran players. Everyone that showed up enjoyed themselves and felt like they were welcome. I couldn't be happier with how the night went!

Berks PA Gaming Club First Meeting

Well, we had the first official meeting of the Berks PA Gaming Club!

What does this mean? It means that we are officially a Club. An actual, organized gaming club. With our rapid growth over the past 12-18 months, growth from Networking with other gaming clubs, and additional expansion into hosting events, we have come to a postion that we needed to formally organize our Gaming Community.

So, as more details will be forthcoming, know that we are officially the Berks-PA Gaming Club! We will have monthly gatherings at a location, which currently is the Muhlenberg Recreation center on River Rd. And a schedule of upcoming dates will be posted.

Our next scheduled event will be Friday November 19th from 5:30pm-10:30pm. With booking the facility on such short notice, times and dates are a little challenging right now until January. So we will take what we can get.

This does not mean that we cease gaming at our homes, game stores or any where else, it just gives us a place all to our own once a month for all memebers to show up and hang out.

We will have more opportunies to host other events at Club Days. This could be open gaming, scheduled games, like say an Apocolypse event, demo games (I ran a blood bowl demo), or even just coming in and painting and building models. I would love to see a small painting clinic going on at our club events.

So, as it was, we had around a dozen folks give/take show up. There were 3 folks I never met face to face before (Tim, Scott, Pat), and glad to see them show up. I know that the timing wasn't very good for everyone, but now we met and we can move forward with better planning for our club.

Details on the actual formal organization of the club will be posted by the appropriate folks. I just wanted to share the excitement of what has happened.

I ran a Blood Bowl demo and pitted Angel Crespo (orcs) against his brother Edgar (humans), and they ended up playing a full 8-turn half of a game of Blood Bowl. It was crazy and fun, but I think they will both agree it was more tactically challenging than they thought. It was very much a thinking game like chess, but with the cheese and fun of Warhammer and lots of silliness thrown in.

Opening kick off had orc fans throw a rock and killed a human lineman. So the Humans were playing a man down with only 10 player left against 11 orcs. As the orc blockers showed their dominace, they started to move the ball downfield. Thanks to some desperate plays by the humans (and bad dice by the orcs), the ball was knocked loose a few times and eventually a human catcher (WR) picked up the ball. He managed to cut around the defense and streak down the sideline. Orcs chased in desperate pursuit and almost had their clutches on him, but the nimble and agile catcher managed to escape at the end of the half, as time expired in the last turn, scoring a touchdown for the Humans. It was very crazy and fun.

So, what else happened? Folks can tell you, but we hung out, had fun and food, and I saw Cypher and Starvos run two rookies through a 40K demo game, and I saw Boss Capn' General Sir and his friend line up orks to take on Berek and his 13th company of Space Wolves in a large 40K fight.

It was a good time had by all and we look forward to more events down the road!

Schedule is coming!

Open House Gaming - October 9th from 6:00PM to 9:00PM

The Berks Gaming Club will be hosting their first Open House Gaming event on Saturday, October 9th, from 6:00PM to 10:00PM. Everyone is welcome to attend.

They will be discussing the formal organization of the Berks Gaming Club, upcoming activities, and will be GAMING!

Any and all games are encouraged (Warhammer, Warhammer 40K, Blood Bowl, Flames of War, etc.). If time permits, there may even be a Blood Bowl demo for those who are looking into starting that game.

The event will be held at the Muhlenberg Recreation Center, 3025 River Rd., Reading, PA.

We're Just Getting Started!

A lot of people are working on getting the different gaming club sites active. So far we only have the Berks Warhammer 40K site and Erik A is working diligently on getting the forums up and running.

Eventually, "Steel Thunder" Mike will have a Berks Blood Bowl site up and I think someone will be starting a Warhammer site. Colin may return from his war re-enactments and put a Flames of War site up.

A lot of things are happening within our humble gaming community. Keep checking back here to see what other gaming clubs are up and running.
